Here at Arrow Creek Campground, we watch the seasons shift with particular attention. Late August brings something special to the Smokies: cooler mornings that hint at fall, earlier sunsets painting the ridgelines orange, and that first crisp edge to the air after dark. Our guests who visit in September and October experience some of the best camping of the year, but mountain temperatures can drop fast once the sun goes down. We’ve seen plenty of RVers arrive unprepared for those 40-degree nights, and we’d rather help you get your rig ready now than watch you struggle with a furnace that won’t fire up when you need it most.
Why Late August Is Your Preparation Window
The timing matters more than most people realize. Right now, RV service centers have availability. Come mid-September, when everyone suddenly remembers they need propane system checks and furnace inspections, you’ll be waiting weeks for an appointment. We’re at 1,400 feet elevation here at the edge of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and we’ve recorded September nights in the low 40s. By October, we’ve seen frost on the windshields. Your RV fall camping preparation needs to happen before you hook up and head out.
The temperature swings in the Smokies catch people off guard. You might enjoy a 75-degree afternoon hiking to Laurel Falls, then return to a 45-degree evening at your site. Your heating system needs to work reliably, your insulation needs to be sound, and your propane supply needs to be adequate. These aren’t concerns you want to discover at 10 PM when the temperature drops.
Heating System Inspection and Testing
Start with your furnace. If you haven’t run it since last winter, don’t wait until your first cold night to discover problems. Fire it up now and let it run for 20 minutes. Listen for unusual sounds: rattling, grinding, or hesitation in the blower motor. Check that warm air flows from all vents evenly. We’ve had guests discover blocked vents, failed thermostats, and dead blower motors during their first cold night here, and there’s no RV repair shop within easy reach when you need one at 11 PM on a Saturday.
Clean or replace your furnace filter if your system has one. Dust and debris accumulate during summer storage, and a clogged filter makes your furnace work harder and less efficiently. Inspect the exterior furnace vent for spider webs, wasp nests, or other blockages. Mountain spiders love these protected spaces, and a blocked vent can cause your furnace to shut down or, worse, create a carbon monoxide hazard.
Test your thermostat at multiple temperature settings. Set it to 65, then 70, then 75, and confirm the furnace responds appropriately each time. A failing thermostat might work at one setting but not another, and you want to know this before you’re trying to troubleshoot in the dark.
Propane System Check and Supply Planning
Your propane system powers more than just your furnace. It runs your water heater, stove, and possibly your refrigerator. Fall mountain camping means you’ll use significantly more propane than summer trips. We recommend a full inspection of your entire propane system before any extended fall camping trip.
Check every connection point for leaks using soapy water. Spray the solution on connections and watch for bubbles. Pay special attention to the regulator, which can develop leaks over time. Inspect all visible propane lines for cracks, wear, or damage from rodents. We’re surrounded by forest here, and mice will chew through rubber lines if given the opportunity.
Consider your propane capacity realistically. If you have a single 30-pound tank and you’re planning a week-long stay in October, you’ll likely run out. Running your furnace overnight in 40-degree weather consumes propane faster than most people expect. Top off your tanks before you arrive, and if you’re staying long-term, know that our camp store can help with propane refills.
Test your propane detector while you’re at it. These devices expire, usually after five to seven years, and a non-functioning detector is a safety risk you can’t afford. Replace the batteries even if it seems to be working.
Weatherproofing and Insulation Assessment
Walk around your RV and inspect every seal, seam, and potential entry point for air. Window seals deteriorate in summer heat, and even small gaps let cold air pour in when temperatures drop. Run your hand around window frames, slide-outs, and door frames on a windy day. You’ll feel drafts you never noticed during warm weather.
Check the condition of your window treatments. Thermal curtains or insulated shades make a substantial difference in heat retention. If you’re still using the thin day/night shades that came with your RV, consider upgrading before fall. The temperature difference between insulated and non-insulated windows becomes obvious when it’s 40 degrees outside.
Inspect your skirting if you use it, or consider adding it for extended stays. We allow skirting at Arrow Creek for our long-term guests, and it dramatically improves heating efficiency. Even simple foam board insulation around your RV’s base helps retain heat and protects your water lines from freezing.
Don’t forget your roof vents and skylights. These are major sources of heat loss. Make sure the seals are intact and the covers close tightly. A roof vent left even slightly open overnight will dump your heated air straight out.
Tire Pressure and Temperature Compensation
Temperature changes affect tire pressure more than most RVers realize. For every 10-degree drop in temperature, your tires lose about one PSI. If you set your tire pressure at 80 degrees in August and the temperature drops to 40 degrees in October, you’ve lost roughly four PSI per tire. Underinflated tires increase rolling resistance, reduce fuel economy, and create safety hazards on mountain roads.
Check your tire pressure now and record it. Then check it again when temperatures drop into the 50s or 60s. Adjust as needed to maintain your manufacturer’s recommended cold inflation pressure. Keep a quality tire pressure gauge in your RV, not one of the cheap stick gauges that come free with air compressors.
Inspect your tires for weather cracking, uneven wear, or damage while you’re checking pressure. Mountain roads are harder on tires than flat interstate driving, and Highway 321 up to our campground has its share of curves and elevation changes. The last thing you want is a tire failure on a mountain road in cool weather when help might be 30 minutes away.
Water System Preparation and Freeze Protection Knowledge
You’re not winterizing yet, but you need to understand when you might need to. At our elevation, we occasionally see overnight temperatures in the upper 20s by late October. Your water system can freeze if temperatures drop below 32 degrees for extended periods, especially if you’re not running your furnace or if your water bay isn’t heated.
Know where your water bay is located and whether it’s heated. Many RVs have heated water bays, but the heat only works if your furnace is running. If you plan to let your furnace cycle off overnight to save propane, you risk frozen lines. Test your bay heater now by running your furnace and checking if the water bay area warms up.
Carry antifreeze and know how to do an emergency partial winterization if needed. We’ve had guests need to drain their systems during unexpected cold snaps, and the process is much easier if you’ve practiced it once at home. You don’t need to fully winterize for fall camping, but you should know the steps if temperatures drop unexpectedly.
Insulate your fresh water hose and use a heated hose if you’re connecting to our water supply during cold weather. An uninsulated hose will freeze solid in a single night below 28 degrees, and a frozen hose means no water until it thaws.
Battery Performance in Cooler Temperatures
Cold weather reduces battery capacity and efficiency. Your house batteries that easily run your furnace fan and lights in summer will drain faster in fall. Lead-acid batteries lose about 20% of their capacity at 32 degrees compared to 80 degrees. Lithium batteries handle cold better but still experience reduced performance.
Test your battery bank now under load. Run your furnace, lights, and water pump simultaneously for an hour and monitor your voltage. If your batteries struggle in August, they’ll fail in October. Clean your battery terminals, check water levels in flooded lead-acid batteries, and ensure your charging system works properly.
Consider how you’ll maintain your batteries during your stay. We have full hookup sites with 30 and 50 amp service, so you can keep your batteries charged. But if you’re planning any dry camping side trips into the park, make sure your batteries can handle the increased furnace use that cooler weather demands.
Emergency Supplies and Backup Plans
Pack for the reality of mountain weather, not the forecast. We’ve seen October days start at 38 degrees and reach 72 by afternoon, then drop back to 35 overnight. Bring extra blankets, sleeping bags rated for lower temperatures than you expect, and warm clothing layers.
Carry backup heating options. A quality sleeping bag rated for 20 degrees will keep you comfortable even if your furnace fails. Some guests bring small electric space heaters for extra warmth on particularly cold nights, though these draw significant power and work only on hookups.
Stock extra propane, even if you think you have enough. Running out of propane on a cold night isn’t just inconvenient; it’s potentially dangerous if temperatures drop into the 30s and you have no way to heat your RV. We can help with refills, but having a backup tank means you’re never caught short.
