We love August at Arrow Creek Campground, but we won’t sugarcoat it: late summer in the Smokies can test your RV’s cooling system like no other time of year. When afternoon temperatures climb into the low 90s and your air conditioner has been running nonstop since Memorial Day, that’s when systems start showing their age. Last week alone, three of our guests dealt with AC issues during the hottest stretch we’ve seen this season. The good news? Most of these problems are preventable with some straightforward RV air conditioning maintenance you can do right here at your site.
Why Mountain Camping Is Harder on Your AC Than You Think
Here’s something many RVers don’t realize until they’ve spent a few summers in the Smokies: mountain camping actually stresses your air conditioning system more than flat terrain camping. At Arrow Creek, we sit at around 1,400 feet elevation where morning temperatures might start in the comfortable mid-60s. By 3 PM, you’re looking at 88-92 degrees with full sun beating down on your RV roof. That’s a 25-30 degree temperature swing your AC unit has to manage in a single day.
Your compressor cycles on and off repeatedly as temperatures climb, then works overtime during peak afternoon heat, then cycles down again as evening brings cooler air flowing down from the mountains. This constant cycling wears on components faster than steady-state operation in consistently hot climates. Add in the fact that your unit has likely been running hard since you arrived in May or June, and you can see why August is when we see the most AC-related service calls.
The humidity matters too. Summer humidity in East Tennessee typically runs between 70-85 percent. Your AC isn’t just cooling air but pulling moisture out of it constantly. That condensation has to drain properly, and when it doesn’t, you get problems that compound quickly in this climate.
The Essential RV Air Conditioning Maintenance Checklist
We recommend running through this checklist every two weeks during summer, or weekly if you’re staying with us long-term and running your AC daily. You can complete most of these tasks in about 30 minutes right at your site.
Start with the air filter. Remove the interior return air cover and pull out the filter. Hold it up to sunlight. If you can’t see light passing through clearly, it needs cleaning or replacement. We keep spare filters in our camp store because this is the single most common issue we see. A clogged filter forces your system to work 20-30 percent harder and can lead to frozen coils. Wash reusable filters with mild soap and water, let them dry completely, and reinstall. The difference in airflow is immediately noticeable.
Next, get up on your roof. The exterior fins on your AC unit collect an incredible amount of debris in the Smokies. Pine pollen in spring, cottonwood seeds in early summer, and dust from the gravel roads around the campground all accumulate on those coils. Use a soft brush to gently remove visible debris, then spray the fins with a garden hose from the inside out. Never use a pressure washer as it will bend the delicate aluminum fins. Check your condensate drain while you’re up there. It should be dripping water when the AC runs. If it’s dry or you see water pooling on your roof, the drain is clogged. A clogged drain can cause water to back up into your RV or freeze the evaporator coil. Clear it by gently pushing a piece of flexible wire through the drain tube.
Inspect the rubber gasket where your AC unit meets the roof. Sun exposure and temperature extremes degrade this seal over time. If you see cracks or gaps, you’re letting hot air into your RV and making your system work harder. Dicor lap sealant is the fix, and proper RV air conditioning maintenance includes resealing this joint every couple of years.
Inside your RV, remove the ceiling assembly cover and look at the evaporator coil. It should be clean and dry when the unit isn’t running. If you see ice buildup, turn off the AC immediately and let it thaw completely before running it again. Ice on the coil means restricted airflow, usually from a dirty filter or a refrigerant issue.
Optimizing Your AC Performance in Mountain Heat
Even a well-maintained system needs help during peak heat. We’ve learned some strategies from our long-term guests that make a real difference in how hard your AC has to work.
Position matters more than most people realize. When you check in, we try to place RVs with AC concerns in sites with afternoon shade when possible. Sites 12-18 along the creek get shade from mature oaks starting around 2 PM. If you’re already set up in full sun, consider using your awning on the sunny side of your RV. Blocking direct sunlight from hitting your walls and windows can reduce your interior temperature by 5-10 degrees.
Use your roof vents strategically. This seems counterintuitive, but cracking your vents slightly creates airflow that helps your AC work more efficiently. Hot air rises and needs somewhere to go. With vents closed tight, that hot air just circulates. Open them an inch or two and run your vent fans on low to exhaust hot air while your AC pumps in cool air from below.
Cook outside during the hottest part of the day. We see RVers running their ovens at 3 PM when it’s already 90 degrees outside, then wondering why their AC can’t keep up. Use your campfire grill or the outdoor cooking area near the bathhouse. Your AC will thank you, and you’ll enjoy the mountain evening air while dinner cooks.
Consider the two-unit advantage. If your RV has dual AC units, run both during peak afternoon heat rather than trying to make one unit do all the work. Two units running at 70 percent capacity will last longer and cool more effectively than one unit straining at 100 percent.
What to Do When Your AC Fails at Arrow Creek
Despite your best RV air conditioning maintenance efforts, systems fail. When yours does, you have options beyond suffering through the heat or cutting your trip short.
First, stop by the office. We keep a list of local RV service technicians who can come to the campground, usually within 24 hours. While you wait for repairs, we can often move you to one of our camping cabins if one is available. Our cabins have mini-split AC units that handle the heat beautifully, plus covered porches where you can sit and actually feel the mountain breeze. Several guests have made this switch mid-stay when their RV AC died, and most tell us they wished they’d booked a cabin from the start.
For minor cooling help, we loan out box fans to guests dealing with AC issues. Position one in your doorway facing out during the cooler morning hours to flush hot air, then reverse it to pull in cool air once the sun goes down. Knowing When to Call a Professional
Some RV air conditioning maintenance tasks are DIY-friendly. Others require a certified technician with proper equipment and refrigerant certification.
If your AC runs but doesn’t cool, and you’ve already cleaned the filter and coils, you likely have a refrigerant leak or compressor issue. Don’t attempt to add refrigerant yourself. Modern RV AC units use R410A refrigerant that requires specific handling and equipment. A mobile tech can diagnose and repair refrigerant issues at your site in a few hours.
Strange noises like grinding, squealing, or loud clicking indicate mechanical problems with the fan motor or compressor. Turn off the unit and call for service. Running a failing compressor can turn a $300 repair into a $1,200 replacement.
If your AC won’t turn on at all, check your breaker first. These units draw significant amperage, and breakers trip. If resetting the breaker doesn’t solve it, you might have a capacitor failure or control board issue. Both require professional diagnosis.
Electrical issues at the campground pedestal can also affect AC performance. If your unit struggles to start or runs weakly, stop by the office and we’ll check the pedestal voltage. Low voltage from the power grid during peak usage times can prevent your AC from running properly. We can sometimes move you to a different site with better power if needed.
Preparing for the Rest of Summer and Beyond
The heat will stick around through mid-September here in the Smokies. Labor Day weekend often brings some of the hottest weather we see all year, with campgrounds full and AC units running at maximum capacity.
If your system has struggled this summer, consider having it professionally serviced before next season. Fall and winter are when RV service shops have availability and often run specials on AC maintenance. A full service includes checking refrigerant levels, testing the compressor, cleaning coils thoroughly, and replacing worn components before they fail.
